It is with great pleasure that I issue this message to the web page of Visakha Vidyalaya on my assumption of duties as Principal on the 5th October, 1999.
Visakha Vidyalaya is today the foremost Govt. Girls' National School in
the Island. Thereby it has more than fulfilled the hopes of its founder, the
late Mrs. Jeremias Dias. To her philanthropy and foresight in having
inaugurated this great seat of learning, the entire nation owes a debt of
gratitude. The standards of excellence prevailing at Visakha today are the
result of the selfless and devoted services of a line of illustrious past
principals and teachers, the assistance and co-operation of past pupils here
and abroad, parents, students and well wishers. Through the years, both as
the Principal of a neighbouring school and as a parent, I have seen Visakha
Vidyalaya grow, and rejoiced in its growth. Today, I consider it a privilege
to be able to hold office as the Head of this great institution. In keeping
with the aspirations of its founder, Visakha Vidyalaya tries to combine the
best of traditional Sinhala Buddhist Culture with the most modern
developments in the fields. We believe it will enhance social stability and
also help to meet the challenges of a new world.
At Visakha therefore we seek to give our students not only learning and
knowledge but also opportunities to develop all facets of their
personalities. We strive to strengthen their qualities of leadership and to
install in them a sense of duty and service to the community they live in,
so that they could make a positive contribution to make this world a better
place to live in, with peace and harmony and a higher standard of living.
As we move towards a new millennium and a new century, it is my fervent wish
that we would be able to make greater and greater strides towards these
ends. It is only if we move forward together, with unity, determination, and
singleness of purpose, that we can succeed in our endeavours.
With the goodwill and cooperation of all - teachers, parents, past pupils,
students, and well wishers and the Blessings of the Noble Triple Gem, I am
confident that I would gain the strength and wisdom to guide Visakha to
achieve these goals.
Mrs. R.M.L. Jayasekara
Principal
Visakha Vidyalaya
