Message from the Principal
From humble beginnings in 1917, Visakha Vidyalaya gradually gained ground and became the premier Buddhist girls school and today continues to enjoy the envious position of being the best girls school in Sri Lanka.
I consider it a rare privilege to be at the helm of Visakha Vidyalaya, an
exemplary educational institute which not only has an illustrious history
but also has so much potential for the future. Visakhians have excelled in
all spheres they have chosen- science, medicine, technology, commerce, arts,
aesthetics etc.
Visakha as in the past is the first choice of parents who seek the best
possible education for their daughters. They are assured of a good all-round
education in a Buddhist environment. And the students who are enrolled are
more or less the crème de la crème.
Visakha Vidyalaya has an unrivalled reputation for co-curricular and extra
curricular activities. Today over 50 vibrant societies, associations and
clubs exist in the school. A plethora of activities are organized each year
by the versatile Visakhians under the able guidance of the teachers. More
than 20 sports are practised and cricket was introduced recently.
The OGA is indeed a great source of strength to the school. The renovation
of the Bouganvillea Block is their most recent donation.
My goal is to achieve excellence with equity; I commenced work by declaring
a mission statement which in twenty one words spells out the ultimate goal
of producing a total woman, perfect in every aspect.
Visakha, who lived in the period of Gautama Buddha, is considered as a
peerless giver among women and her story abounds with lessons for girls. It
is said that she held the entire Eightfold Path in the palm of her hand
through her generosity and virtuous character. It is my fervent wish that
the girls who pass through the portals of Visakha Vidyalaya will emulate
this exemplary lady.
May the lamp of Visakha shine brightly forever dispelling darkness and
ignorance and bring hope, joy and wisdom to all.
