Medical Aid Fund - October 2006

The Sports Sub Committee of the VVOGA will be inaugurating a Medical Aid Fund for the benefit of students, teachers of Visakha Vidyalaya and members of the OGA.

Tills will be placed in the two school canteens and the general office commencing 11th October 2006.

The principal will ceremonially inaugurate this event at 9.00 A.M. on the 11th at the Bougainvillea Cafeteria of the school.

The OGA solicits the support of the old girls and well-wishers to make this Medical Aid Fund a successful venture.


PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN BY THE SCHOOL AT PRESENT:

  • A project to uplift smaller schools has been undertaken by the Primary Section since 1990.
  • In 2000, with the help of the Ministry of Ethnic Affairs, a special project was carried out to partition an 8-acre land with a barbed-wire fence at Vogollakada Jayanthi Vidyalaya, Horowpathana in the Anuradhapura district.
  • Organized a health clinic for students, parents, and residents of Horowpathana in the Anuradhapura district at Dutuwewa Vidyalaya. Donation of school and sports equipment, library books to schools in the area.
  • Continuing providing aid to Modera St. Andrews College.
  • Upgrading of the Computer Centre and computerization of the office is still ongoing.
  • Upgrading of the Audio Visual Centre for the use of both students and the staff.
  • Counseling and Student Career Advisory Services.
  • Programme launched to foster awareness of the environment and that of the control of waste matter is progressing well.
  • Special projects to widen the knowledge of English in the primary section.

SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT SOCIETY (SDS)

The maintenance of the school buildings and its environs, the payment of the wages of the minor staff, library officials, security personnel, and sickroom warden, and payment of salaries of the interim teachers are under the auspices of the School Development Society.

Projects undertaken by the SDS in 1999/2000

  • Payment of salaries to the staff members who conduct special Tamil, Japanese, and other language classes.
  • Payment of salaries to trainers in sports and extra-curricular activities.
  • Facilitates training in flute and the western band.
  • Organized a western musical show and a 'sisu rangum' both in 1999 and 2000 to raise funds for the SDS.
  • Supervision and maintenance of the supply of electricity, water, telephone, public announcement system, and other school equipment.
  • Organized 'sramadana' campaigns both in 1999 and 2000 with the co-operation of parents and fumigated for mosquitos as a preventive measure for the spread of dengu fever.
  • Built a garage for the school van and bus.
  • Maintenance of school ground and addition of new equipment.
  • Implemented a special project to help students with financial difficulties by establishing student welfare bank accounts.
  • Sponsors students who participate in International competitions.
  • Construction of a new hostel and a home science centre is already under way.
  • Plans to build a conference hall and a water tank with the aid of the Ministry of Education is in progress.

ACTIVITIES AND SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE OGA

  • "Signatures for the OGA Table Cloth" project
    The OGA table cloth has adorned the stage at all school functions since 1957, and bears the embroidered signatures of many old girls, some belonging to a generation gone by. It is indeed a veritable OGA heirloom. Those who wish to join this honour roll are invited to send their signatures along with their name, address, OGA membership number, and a cheque for Rs. 750/ = in favour of the Visakha Vidyalaya Old Girls' association to Dr. Priya de Silva, 22/2, Nandimitra Place, Colombo 6.

  • Holds the Susan George Pulimood Memorial Oration annually and awards 2 scholarships on every occasion.
  • Organizes annual Avurudu pola, Visakha walk, Old girls' sports carnival, Esala sil programme, reunion trip, Past teachers get together, and health camps.
  • Donation of necessary items to the Army hospital and Palali Army hospital.
  • Organized a blood donation campaign for the National Blood bank.
  • Donation of furniture and equipment to a primary school in Welioya.
  • Maintenance, renovation, and upgrading of Jeremias Dias hall.
  • Provides the services of tuck shops, photo copying, and laminating.
  • Facilitates coaching in English language, speech and drama, and choir.
  • Facilitated rejuvenation of the western band.
  • Sponsors students who are participating in drama competitions.
  • Set up a computer room for the Junior section, addition of new equipment to the computer room of Senior section, and organization of computer courses and career advising seminars.

ACTIVITIES AND SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE UK BRANCH OGA

  • The UK Branch awards 30 scholarships towards needy students at the GCE Advanced Level and 2 scholarships towards University students, annually.
  • Provides financial assistance to renovate the Boganvillea block and convert it to a modern reading hall and a lunch room.

ACTIVITIES AND SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE MELBOURNE BRANCH OGA

  • Provides financial aid to the school hostel.
